SKATEABLE SCULPTURES

DESIGNED BY ALEXIS SABLONE

AT RAND COURTS

Promoting the creativity and joy of skateboarding for the children of Northern New Jersey”

We’re honored to partner with 2021 Olympic skateboarder, seven-time X Game medalist and MIT Architect Alexis Sablone.

In early 2023, these unique skateable sculptures were built by 5th Pocket Skateparks at Rand Courts in Montclair, NJ.

The space is affectionately known as “Courts Skatepark” and Alexis has referred to her elements as “Candy Courts”.

In partnering with Alexis, we now have one of a kind skateboard obstacles made of concrete and steel.

Montclair is the first community in the United States with skateable sculptures designed by Alexis Sablone.

Alexis’s first sculptures are in Malmo, Sweden.

The original DIY skatepark at Rand Park has many donated items to skate. These wooden elements rapidly deteriorate due to weather and constant use by the hundreds of skaters that use them each week. Skate Essex continues to seek donations that can be used towards adding additional unique concrete obstacles to the original courts skatepark.

Skate Essex Thrilled to Use Funds for Olympiad Alexis Sablone’s Skateable Sculptures

Montclair, NJ – On February 28, 2022, Skate Essex Inc, the 501(c)3 nonprofit organization designed to promote skateboarding in Northern New Jersey was thrilled to learn that The Skatepark Project (TSP) (formerly The Tony Hawk Foundation) awarded a $25,000 special award for the next phase of the skate park at Rand Park in Montclair.

Combined with funds raised by Skate Essex, this award money will be used to build seven Skateable Sculptures designed by 2021 USA Olympic skateboarder and seven-time X Games Medalist Alexis Sablone.  Sablone, an MIT and Barnard graduate is the new US women’s skateboarding team head coach for the 2024 Paris games.  These sculptures will be installed at Rand Park on North Fullerton Avenue. Construction is scheduled for mid-March, with groundbreaking in April.

The Process:

The resolution to build the sculptures has been passed thanks to the hard work by our volunteers and members of the Montclair, NJ Town Council.

The money has been raised.

Thanks to Skate Essex’s fundraising efforts, donations from individual donors, a donation from the Helen and William Mazer Foundation and a special projects grant from The Skatepark Project.

5th Pocket Skateparks was selected to complete the project.

Commonly asked questions about the sculptures

Q: Why sculptures? Why Alexis?

A: This is an amazing opportunity. Montclair will be the first community in America with Alexis’s sculptures. Currently, her sculptures can be found in Malmo, Sweden. There is also a project in the works in Virginia.

Q: Why are you taking away tennis courts?

A: We’re an advocacy group on behalf of the broader skateboarding community. We do not control the space, the township does. We love and play tennis too!

Q: Why are our tax dollars supporting this?

A: They’re not. Thanks to the community and grants, we’ve raised the funding needed to build the art and commission Alexis!
